And we’ve been coaxing our demo panelists through their demos–which are all going to be really great, other than no one believes you when you tell them that four minutes went by in just 240 seconds.

Perennial THCB Health2.0 favorites Sermo are cooking up some fun stuff for the wine and cheese reception they’re sponsoring to close the Health2.0 Conference. But they’ve had a huge few days. Last week they announced that the FDA will be using Sermo to monitor potential new adverse drug events and much more. Initially FDA staff will be looking at what docs are talking about online, later they’ll be posing questions. Then Tuesday Sermo announced a $27m Series C Round, which should just about cover the cost of the cocktails….

Meanwhile, Kosmix has taken the beta tag off its RightHealth stealth search engine site. You can hear far more about this from my interview with Venky a month or two back. But they’ve announced that they got 2.5 million visits and 9 million searches generated a month and are in the top 12 health search sites measured by Hitwise. The concept is to extend the “home age for a search” to let people explore topics in context, while still making those top 10 search results visible.

Speaking of searches, OrganizedWisdom is changing its spots and moving from being a user-generated content site, to being a community search site that integrates user-generated content from all over.  More details here and to be revealed at the conference next week. CEO Steven Krein tried to explain this to me at lunch a while back but I didn’t understand what he was talking about. Now I do and it’s really very interesting.

The symptoms associated with Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS) include pain in the muscles and joints, insomnia, fatigue, brain fog, and digestive imbalances. This is a disease process that takes many forms of expressing itself and is tenacious in nature. Because Chinese medical therapies treat energetic imbalances in the body, fibromyalgia responds extremely well to this type of treatment.

Typically, FMS patients look healthy. Hence, no one can imagine that they are quite ill and in a great deal of pain. As a result, FMS sufferers receive little empathy from family, friends, or even health care practitioners. Western medical practitioners often avoid billing using a fibromyalgia code fearing reprisals from insurance companies that are still debating whether or not fibromyalgia even exists. FMS patients also run into misinformed health practitioners who treat fibromyalgia patients as drug seekers. This is because FMS does not respond well to pain medications and patients, especially those with severe pain, are looking for solutions where they may not exist. There is a great deal of mystery surrounding the origins of FMS. Western medicine has yet to determine the cause of FMS. However, according to the ancient theories of Chinese medicine, fibromyalgia follows patterns of imbalance associated with Qi (vital energy loosely), organs and energetic qualities of the body leading to pain syndromes. Some of the patterns are as follows:

1) Latent Pathogens
According to Chinese medicine, a cold or flu is treated by releasing the pathogen to the exterior. Part of this process includes opening the pours by causing a sweat. If an exterior pathogen is not treated properly, it can become lodged in the interior of the body. This unresolved virus can lodge itself in the muscle tissue, or more seriously, in the organs of the body. Interestingly, antibiotics are very cold in nature and cold causes contraction. When antibiotics are used in the presence of an exterior pathogen, the pathogen cannot move to the exterior. Environment toxins are also pathogenic factors that can become stuck in the muscle tissue.

2) Liver Qi Constraints
The Liver is dynamic in its ability to move Qi in all directions in the body. When the Liver function becomes constrained, there is a tendency for the Liver to become heated. Not only does the Liver function become impaired, but the Liver overacts on other systems. It can affect the Heart function causing insomnia and the Spleen and Large Intestine functions causing digestive difficulties. With Liver Qi constraints there is typically an emotional imbalance causing frustration, easy anger and even depression.

Those treated with green tea showed slower growth of skin cells and the presence of a gene that regulates the cells’ life cycles.

University of Leeds scientists’ recent findings indicate that treatment for a stiff neck can not only lower blood pressure, but also heart rate and breathing. A team led by Professor Jim Deuchars examined pathways between the neck and the brain to determine how neck muscles could play a role in lowering blood pressure.

Their study, which appears in the Journal of Neuroscience, provides the first evidence for a link between treatment for a stiff neck and brain regions which control body functions such as breathing and blood pressure. “Cells in the area that receive neck signals jumped out at us when we labelled sections with particular markers. We wanted to know how these cells were organized and the other brain regions to which they were connected,” Deuchars said. The team found a link between these cells and the nucleus tractus solitarius, an area of the brain that is pivotal in control of autonomic functions—body functions under unconscious control.

They found that nervous signals from the neck could play a role in ensuring adequate blood supply is maintained to the brain. Previous reports indicate that treatment of the neck region helps to reduce blood pressure in some people.

Acupuncture can be effective in reducing chronic neck pain, according to a recent systematic review of research literature completed by Cochrane review authors to determine whether there is evidence that acupuncture is effective in treating neck disorders due to whiplash, muscle strain and other causes. Acupuncture can minimize neck pain, but there is no cure for the musculoskeletal system disorder. For some individuals, acupuncture may be the best treatment, while different combined therapies may work best for others.

What Are Allergies?

Allergies are an abnormal response of the immune system. People who have allergies have an immune system that reacts to a usually harmless substance in the environment. This substance (pollen, mold, animal dander, etc.) is called an allergen.

Allergies are a very common problem, affecting at least 2 out of every 10 Americans.

How To Prevent Allergies Forever!

What Happens During an Allergic Reaction?

When a person is exposed to an allergen, a series of events takes place:

  1. The body starts to produce a specific type of antibody, called IgE, to bind the allergen.
  2. The antibodies attach to a form of blood cell called a mast cell. Mast cells can be found in the airways, in the GI tract, and elsewhere. The presence of mast cells in the airways and GI tract makes these areas more susceptible to allergen exposure.
  3. The allergens bind to the IgE, which is attached to the mast cell. This triggers a reaction that allows the mast cells to release a variety of chemicals including histamine, which causes most of the symptoms of an allergy, including itchiness or runny nose.

If the allergen is in the air, the allergic reaction will likely occur in the eyes, nose and lungs. If the allergen is ingested, the allergic reaction often occurs in the mouth, stomach, and intestines. Sometimes enough chemicals are released from the mast cells to cause a reaction throughout the body, such as hives, decreased blood pressure, shock, or loss of consciousness.

What Are the Symptoms of Allergies?

Allergy symptoms can be categorized as mild, moderate, or severe (anaphylactic).

  • Mild reactions include those symptoms that affect a specific area of the body such as a rash, itchy, watery eyes, and some congestion. Mild reactions do not spread to other parts of the body.
  • Moderate reactions include symptoms that spread to other parts of the body. These may include itchiness or difficulty breathing.
  • A severe reaction, called anaphylaxis, is a rare, life-threatening emergency in which the respone to the allergen is intense and affects the whole body. It may begin with the sudden onset of itching of the eyes or face and progress within minutes to more serious symptoms, including abdominal pain, cramps, vomiting, and diarrhea, as well as varying degrees of swellings that can make breathing and swallowing difficult. Mental confusion or dizziness may also be symptoms, since anaphylaxis causes a quick drop in blood pressure.

Does Everyone Have Allergies?

No. Most allergies are inherited, which means they are passed on to children by their parents. People inherit a tendency to be allergic, although not to any specific allergen. When one parent is allergic, their child has a 50% chance of having allergies. That risk jumps to 75% if both parents have allergies.
